Crafting time is the stat the game shows you and then does nothing with. It is on every recipe card, but there is no view of the queue as a whole, no total, and no way to know before you press the button that the loadout you just queued is going to take four minutes. Since the dataset behind the bind maker has a craft time for all 626 craftable items, I ran the numbers.
The shape of it
| Items with a craft time | 626 |
|---|---|
| Average | 23.4 seconds |
| Five seconds or less | 69 items |
| Thirty seconds or more | 393 items (63%) |
| A full minute | 7 items |
Sixty-three percent of everything craftable takes half a minute or longer, which is the number that explains the feeling of always waiting. It is not that a few items are slow; it is that most items are, and the fast ones are almost all ammunition and components that you craft in bulk anyway.
The slowest items in the game
| Item | Craft time | Workbench |
|---|---|---|
Rocket Launcher | 60 s | 2 |
Workbench Level 3 | 60 s | 2 |
| Above Ground Pool, Roman Candles (all four colours) | 60 s | 0–1 |
Assault Rifle | 45 s | 3 |
Bolt Action Rifle | 45 s | 3 |
Auto Turret | 45 s | 2 |
Metal Facemask and Chest Plate | 45 s each | 3 |
Heavy Plate helmet, jacket, pants | 45 s each | 2 |
Workbench Level 2 | 45 s | 1 |
Pump Shotgun, Double Barrel, Large Furnace, Flame Thrower | 40 s | 1–2 |
A pattern: the slow items are the one-off items. Guns, benches, turrets, armour. Things you craft once and keep. The game is deliberately making you stand still for the things that matter most, and it is deliberately not doing that for consumables.
The fastest
Fifteen items craft in a single second, and they are almost all components: Metal Pipe, Metal Spring, Metal Blade, Gears, Sewing Kit, Road Signs, the Wire Tool. Gun Powder is two seconds. Buckshot and explosive 5.56 are three seconds per craft of two. Bandages, low grade fuel and satchel charges are five.
This is the half of the design that makes bulk crafting viable at all. A stack of 128 rifle rounds is 43 crafts at three seconds, about two minutes. A stack of gun powder is 100 crafts at two seconds, just over three. Neither is instant, and both are the kind of thing you queue and walk away from.
How long a raid actually takes to craft
This is the calculation I wanted when I started, because nobody quotes it. A rocket is ten seconds on the card, but the card does not include the intermediates, and the queue crafts one thing at a time. Fully from raw materials:
| One rocket needs… | Crafts | Each | Queue time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gun Powder (650, incl. what the Explosives use) | 65 | 2 s | 130 s |
| Explosives | 10 | 5 s | 50 s |
| Metal Pipe | 2 | 1 s | 2 s |
| The rocket itself | 1 | 10 s | 10 s |
| Total per rocket | 3 min 12 s |
So eight rockets is about 26 minutes of queue. A Timed Explosive Charge is worse: twenty Explosives (100 s) and the thousand gun powder inside them (200 s), plus 30 seconds for the charge, is 5 minutes 30 seconds each, so four C4 is 22 minutes. A modest raid kit of eight rockets and four C4 is 48 minutes of continuous crafting from raw materials, before anyone has left the base.
That number is the argument for two habits. Keep a stack of gun powder made ahead of time, which removes more than half of it (the gun powder guide makes the case). And split the crafting across the group: four people each queueing two rockets finish in six minutes, not twenty-six.
Queueing so the wait does not matter
The queue crafts in the order it was given, and a bind adds items in the order they are written. Two consequences follow. Put the thing you need first, first: a medic bind should queue bandages (5 s each) before syringes (10 s), because you can grab the bandages while the syringes are still cooking. And put slow one-offs at the end of a line, or on their own key, so a fifteen-second armour piece does not hold up a stack of ammo.
The bind maker keeps items in the order you add them, so this is as simple as adding the fast consumables first. The loadout guide is already ordered that way.
Method
Craft times come from the same dataset as the recipes, compiled from Corrosion Hour, and are the base times with no crafting-speed modifiers applied. Queue-time totals assume you are crafting every intermediate yourself from raw materials and that nothing was pre-made. Every item page on this site shows its individual time next to the recipe.
